Sedbergh Prep School completes major summer investment in boarding, pre-prep and outdoor learning
As pupils returned for the start of the new academic year, they were welcomed back to a number of exciting new developments following a significant programme of investment across Sedbergh Prep. More than £200,000 has been invested over the summer to enhance boarding, Early Years provision and outdoor learning, ensuring children continue to benefit from exceptional facilities that support both learning and childhood itself.
One of the most significant developments has been the creation of a dedicated Pre-Prep environment, bringing together Pre-School, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 within a space designed specifically for the needs of younger children. Carefully planned indoor and outdoor learning areas provide an inspiring environment where curiosity, creativity and confidence can flourish, whilst maintaining close links with the wider life of the school.
The move has also created additional capacity within Mulberry Bush Nursery, enabling the nursery to further develop its provision for babies and toddlers and respond to growing demand from local families.
These developments reflect the Sedbergh Schools Group’s continued commitment to investing in outstanding educational environments that enable every child to flourish. By combining the warmth and individual attention of a Prep School with the strength and long-term vision of the wider Group, Sedbergh Prep is able to continue investing in the people, places and opportunities that make a lasting difference to children’s lives.
A major refurbishment of the school’s boarding accommodation has also been completed, supporting the introduction of Sedbergh Prep’s new unified boarding model. The investment has created welcoming communal spaces, enhanced bathroom facilities and improved accommodation, ensuring boarding continues to provide a warm, nurturing environment where children develop independence, resilience and friendships that often last a lifetime.
The school’s outdoor environment has also been enhanced, with a new den-building area and play spaces. These developments reflect Sedbergh Prep’s belief that childhood should be filled with opportunities to explore, imagine and discover. Whether building dens, climbing, working together or simply enjoying the freedom of the outdoors, pupils benefit from an environment that encourages adventure, creativity and collaboration.
Alongside these physical improvements, Sedbergh Prep has continued to invest in its educational provision. This September has seen the launch of Fells & Trails, an innovative programme for Years 7 and 8 that combines academic challenge with leadership, character development, practical life skills and outdoor education, ensuring pupils leave Prep School exceptionally well prepared for Senior School and beyond.
Kate Martin, Head of Sedbergh Prep, said:
“Schools should never stand still. Every decision we make about our buildings, curriculum and facilities begins with one question: ‘Will this make a meaningful difference to our children?’
“These developments are not simply about improving our estate; they are about creating even better opportunities for children to learn, play, grow and discover who they are. From our youngest children taking their very first steps through Pre-Prep, to our boarders developing confidence and independence, every investment has been made with the pupil experience firmly at its heart.
“At Sedbergh Prep, we believe childhood should be something to treasure. We want children to have the time and freedom to explore, to play, to take on new challenges and to develop the confidence that comes from trying something different. These new facilities strengthen our ability to provide exactly that, whilst ensuring every child benefits from an ambitious education that prepares them exceptionally well for the future.”
The investment reflects Sedbergh Prep’s continuing commitment to providing an education where academic excellence sits alongside exceptional pastoral care, outstanding opportunities and a deep understanding of childhood.
Families are warmly invited to discover these exciting developments during Open Week, taking place from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the new facilities, meet pupils and staff, and experience first-hand the warmth, ambition and strong sense of community that define a Sedbergh Prep education.
