Tips for Making Friends at School

Whether you’re new to the School or returning – the first days of the new year can be a bit daunting. However, there are some tried and true ways to make friends. But don’t just take our word for it! We asked our pupils for their top tips.

Tip #1. Introduce yourself to other children

All of our pupils agree that it is a great idea to introduce yourself to as many children as possible! That can feel a bit scary – especially if you’re shy – but remember, the other pupils are in the same situation as you and are likely to be just as nervous and keen to make friends too. Remember, that some of the pupils you know from last year might have more in common than you remember, so chat with them too and before you know it, you will have made a lot of friends.

Tip #2. Be yourself

The second most popular tip amongst our pupils is to just relax and be yourself; don’t try to be different to your normal self. By doing this you are bound to find friends who like similar things to you.

Tip #3. Join in with the breaktime and pre-school activities

The next tip from our pupils is to join in the range of great break time and pre-school activities! It’s a terrific way to find other pupils who are interested in the same things as you.

Tip #4. Explore to learn your way about the school

Learning your way about the school will make you feel a lot more confident – and if you ask your new friends to come with you then you will be getting to know them more too!

“Be confident”
“Talk, be polite”
“Be eager to get involved”
“Try the activities/sport”
“Find other children with the same interests”
“Throw yourself in”

In this vein, at the end of the first week of the new academic year, the whole of Sedbergh Prep School takes part in a sponsored walk for the chosen charity of the term. Our Pre-Prep children tackle a 3-mile route, whilst the older pupils take on a 10 mile loop that heads over the top of Casterton Fell. It is a fantastic opportunity for children, staff and parents to get together in the great outdoors, make new friends, reacquaint with old ones and challenge themselves, all whilst raising money for a good cause.
