Developing Our Year 8 Pupil Leaders
Early in the new academic year, Mr Goligher spoke to the Year 8 pupils about Chris Bosh, the former NBA champion and author of Letters to a Young Athlete. Each pupil was given a copy of Chapter 7, entitled “Leaders Lead”, and were tasked to reflect on the lessons they could take from it.
Bosh’s story is an inspiring one. A Basketball Hall of Famer, Olympic gold medallist, and two-time NBA champion with the Miami Heat, he writes candidly to young athletes about the qualities that make not just great players, but great people. In Chapter 7, he focuses on leadership, drawing on his own experience of playing alongside and learning from world-class teammates.
The pupils were encouraged to think about leadership not only in the sporting arena but in all aspects of school life – in the classroom, on stage, and in the wider community. Among the key themes they considered were:
- The significance of leadership in a team – recognising that strong leaders bring people together, guiding and inspiring others towards shared goals.
- Leading by example – understanding that actions often speak louder than words, and that quiet role models can be as influential as vocal captains.
- Resilience in difficult moments – seeing how true leaders step forward when things are not going well, offering calm, direction, and encouragement.
- The power of communication – realising that effective leaders listen as well as speak, and build trust through clear, respectful dialogue.
- Team bonding and trust – appreciating that leadership is not about titles, but about building a culture of respect, belonging, and support.
Through these reflections, pupils are beginning to see that leadership is not confined to sports captains or head roles, but is something every young person can practise in their own way. Whether through setting a positive example, supporting a peer, or helping to create a collaborative environment, leadership is about influence and integrity.
We look forward to the conversations and insights that will come from this exercise, and we hope it will encourage our pupils to consider the type of leaders they can become – at school and beyond.
