Tight Lines: The Art of Fly Fishing at Sedbergh Prep
At Sedbergh Prep School, education extends well beyond the classroom—and down to the banks of the River Lune. One of the most unique and enriching co-curricular opportunities available to our pupils is fly fishing, a skill that teaches not only patience and precision, but also respect for nature and the power of quiet focus.

Led by Dr Hoskin and under the expert guidance of European and GB gold medallist Ben Dobson, our fly fishing club introduces pupils to a pursuit that is part science, part art, and wholly absorbing. During the winter months, pupils learn the intricate craft of fly tying in Dr Hoskin’s laboratory-turned-workshop, carefully selecting colours and feathers to imitate the insects that fish feed on throughout the seasons.

But the real magic happens riverside. Out on the Lune, pupils experience the rhythm of casting, the challenge of outwitting trout, and the calm that comes with spending time outdoors. As Dr Hoskin puts it, “Fly fishing allows our pupils to gain an appreciation of the intricate balance between humans and nature—all in the most beautiful setting, right on Sedbergh Prep’s doorstep.”

Far from just a pastime, fly fishing helps pupils develop focus, resilience, and a deeper sense of wellbeing. It’s a powerful reminder that learning comes in many forms—and that some of the most valuable lessons in life can be found by standing in a river, rod in hand.
