Developing the whole person

Shaping character. Strengthening values. Preparing pupils for life beyond school.

Alongside academic attainment, the development of character and values is central to a Sedbergh education.

Houses, sport, service, friendships and leadership all play a part in shaping young people. In a full boarding community, these experiences are part of the daily rhythm of school life, giving pupils the time, space and support to grow in confidence, judgement and purpose.

Values in action

Sedbergh’s values — Humility, Ambition, Resilience and Kindness — are not simply words on a page. They shape the habits, expectations and relationships of school life.

The Front 4 gives pupils practical ways to understand and live these values. Service develops Humility by encouraging pupils to contribute to something beyond themselves. Pathways develops Ambition by helping pupils prepare for the future with purpose. Compass develops Resilience by supporting pupils through the decisions and relationships that shape adolescence. Spirit develops Kindness by strengthening a culture of respect, inclusion and belonging.

In this way, values become visible in action: in how pupils lead, serve, work, compete, support one another and respond to challenge.

Front Four

The Front Four is a foundation for developing the whole person. It gives structure to the conversations, experiences and responsibilities that help pupils grow into thoughtful, capable and outward-looking young people.

The programme is built around four strands that all have a clear purpose: Service, Pathways, Compass and Spirit.

The Front 4 is not a standalone lesson or occasional event. It is woven through school life, from House discussions and assemblies to leadership opportunities, charity work, careers guidance, visiting speakers and the everyday expectations of a seven-day community.

Service Pathways

As a truly full boarding school, Sedbergh prides itself on the lifelong relationships and friendships forged within the boarding houses. Pupils are afforded the opportunities to develop ambition, resilience, tolerance and community living in a house supported by House Staff who recognise and celebrate achievement. Sedbergh’s boarding believes in the development of discipline within a modern framework of concern for others with a focus on the Christian values of compassion and humility.

Boarding and belonging

Boarding is central to the Sedbergh experience and closely connected to the way pupils grow as people. It gives pupils time, structure and relationships beyond the classroom, creating a community where they are known, supported and challenged every day of the week.

Sedbergh’s houses maintain the heritage of the school and allow Sedberghians to feel part of a greater picture of history; they live and work in a house safe in the knowledge that thousands of Sedberghians have passed before them with the same values, ethos and understanding of the beauty of the landscape in which they are situated. The unique house dining structure creates familial relationships within a co-educational environment

The Front 4 works alongside boarding and House life. It gives language and structure to the personal development that happens naturally in a full boarding school: learning to live with others, taking responsibility, managing time, building friendships, contributing to the House and developing independence.
