Athletics and Running at Sedbergh

Sedbergh offers extensive, all-year round, opportunities in athletics and running, supported by both dedicated facilities and the advantages of our outstanding natural location in the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales.

Training is structured across the year, beginning with technical and conditioning sessions in the Michaelmas Term, followed by an indoor competition season in Lent, and culminating with athletics and running as core parts of the Summer Term programme. Pupils compete at school, county, and national level, with recent success including national medals on the track.

Sedbergh is ambitious for every pupil—to help them grow as athletes while also developing resilience, discipline, and the confidence to push beyond their limits.

We are proud of our athletics alumni who have gone on to achieve remarkable success: Fraser Sproul, who earned a US track scholarship; Jemima Appiah-Metcalf; Annalotta von der Hydt, who competed nationally in Germany; Henry Akroyd, a disability athlete who competed nationally; Emma Seng, a top 10 sprinter in Germany; and current pupil Hugo, a 1500m national bronze medallist. Yet athletics and running at Sedbergh are not only for those aiming for international success, but for anyone who wants to challenge themselves, enjoy the sport, and discover what they are capable of.

At Sedbergh, athletes don’t just improve their performance—they build character, determination, and ambition.

We build athletes for life.

Multi-sports culture

Athletics and running at Sedbergh are delivered through a dedicated programme that supports both aspiring specialists and pupils who enjoy the sport alongside our strong multi-sport culture.

Development

Training and competition opportunities run throughout the year, with athletes taking part in the indoor season at Manchester, Gateshead and Sheffield, as well as the National Track and Field Cup, English Schools competitions (individual and combined events), regional meets and the Northern Inter Counties. Closer to home, pupils compete in school fixtures against other independent schools, enjoy our annual Sports Day, and from May 2025 will take part in the Sedbergh School Track and Field Open. This structure ensures that Sedbergh athletes experience competition at every level, from school-based fixtures to the national stage.

For Sixth Form athletes, training includes one technical session and one strength and conditioning session each week, fitted into free periods. Pupils in Years 9–11 receive strength and conditioning support throughout the year, often through our early morning training programme, while Year 9 also follow a dedicated movement skills and athletic development block within the PE curriculum.

From the second half of Michaelmas through Lent Term, athletes compete in the indoor season, with opportunities to race at high-quality venues such as Manchester, Sheffield, and Gateshead. During this period, pupils have one games session per week in Michaelmas 2, increasing to two in Lent. The Summer Term sees athletics take centre stage in the games programme, where pupils train and compete across all disciplines.

Sedbergh regularly competes in the English Schools circuit, and in recent years our athletes have secured national medals on the track, reflecting both the depth of talent and the quality of coaching within the programme.
