Front Four

The Front Four is a foundation for developing the whole person. It gives structure to the conversations, experiences and responsibilities that help pupils grow into thoughtful, capable and outward-looking young people.

The programme is built around four strands that all have a clear purpose: Service, Pathways, Compass and Spirit.

The Front 4 is not a standalone lesson or occasional event. It is woven through school life, from House discussions and assemblies to leadership opportunities, charity work, careers guidance, visiting speakers and the everyday expectations of a seven-day community.

Service Pathways

Spirit

Spirit is linked to our HARK value of Kindness, however it is so much more. It focuses on the culture of our school community: how we treat one another, how we respond to difference to help build a community where everyone can feel they belong. This is about teaching pupils that kindness is not simply about being nice; it is about empathy and understanding when you do not truly know what someone is going through.

Spirit helps pupils see that the strength of an inclusive school community depends on the daily choices we all make. Through House life, assemblies, pupil leadership, discussion and shared expectations; pupils learn what it means to be part of a community shaped by respect and care.”

Service

Service at Sedbergh is rooted in Humility and in the understanding that privilege brings responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to look beyond themselves, recognise the needs of others and understand the positive difference they can make within their communities. Through regular volunteering, House initiatives, fundraising, community partnerships and wider charitable work, service is embedded in everyday school life rather than treated as an optional extra. Pupils learn that meaningful contribution is not about praise or recognition, but about giving their time, effort and talents because it is the right thing to do. Our aim is for service to become part of who they are: a lasting mindset of humility, responsibility and contribution that they carry into their future communities, workplaces and lives.

Pathways

Pathways is linked to Ambition. Beginning in Year 9, the programme helps pupils explore their strengths, interests and future possibilities, with guidance becoming more focused as they progress through the School.

Pupils are encouraged to think broadly and ambitiously, while developing the self-knowledge and judgement to make choices that are right for them. Ambition is not defined by one destination or measure of success. It means helping each pupil recognise their potential, make the most of their abilities and pursue a pathway in which they can thrive.

Our role is not to steer pupils towards a single outcome, but to give them the information, experiences, insight and confidence to make well-informed decisions about university, apprenticeships, employment and other future opportunities.

Compass

Compass is linked to Resilience. It helps pupils develop the judgement, habits and practical knowledge they need to navigate adolescence and prepare for life beyond school.

The aim of Compass is to give pupils the tools to manage real-life situations with confidence. It supports them as they learn to look after their health, understand risk, organise their time, prepare for transitions and respond thoughtfully to the pressures and opportunities they encounter as teenagers.

As a truly full boarding school, Sedbergh prides itself on the lifelong relationships and friendships forged within the boarding houses. Pupils are afforded the opportunities to develop ambition, resilience, tolerance and community living in a house supported by House Staff who recognise and celebrate achievement. Sedbergh’s boarding believes in the development of discipline within a modern framework of concern for others with a focus on the Christian values of compassion and humility.
