Winder House

Numbers in the school increased during the First world War and, as a result, Winder House was founded in 1915. It began as a small House run by Mr Counsell in the foothills of Winder on Highfield lane, hence the House name. The House then moved to its current location in 1926 under the leadership of Reverend N. Gorton. Among Winder’s famous sons are numbered Lord Bingham of Cornhill KG, PC, Lord Waddington, Robert Swan and William Carling.

Take a look around Winder House

Winder is blessed by its location just past Robertson House at the end of Winder Drive. The garden is blessed with a marvellous patio and panoramic views over Winder to the North, Boar fell to the East and Frostrow to the South. The location sets it apart from other Houses and Winderians will always say that the short walk down the drive gives a real sense of ‘coming home’ at the end of the day.

Meet the Housemaster: Mr Stewart

I have been Housemaster of Winder House since 2025, and it is a role I value enormously. Before joining Sedbergh, I taught Business Studies and held leadership roles as Head of Rugby and later Director of Sport at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, Portsmouth Grammar School, and Bishop’s Stortford College. At Sedbergh, I continue to teach Business Studies and coach sport, which allows me to work closely with pupils both in the classroom and in the House.

For me, Winder House is far more than just a place to live—it is a family and a support network. My aim is to create a home-from-home environment where every boy is known, supported, and encouraged to grow—not only academically and athletically, but also as a person of character and compassion. I believe in fostering a culture of “we, not me”—a shared sense of purpose where each boy understands that his actions contribute to the well-being and success of the whole community. This ethos is beautifully captured in the Ubuntu philosophy: “I am because we are.” It’s a mantra that underpins life in Winder House, promoting empathy, responsibility, and mutual respect.

Strong communication is central to this approach. I am committed to working in close partnership with parents, and I believe that by keeping those lines of communication open, we can provide the best possible support for your sons throughout their journey. Winder House is known for its strong sense of community and “have-a-go” attitude. Pupils are encouraged to immerse themselves in every aspect of Sedbergh life. The camaraderie and sense of belonging here are deeply cherished, and we work hard to ensure every pupil contributes to and benefits from that community.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Megan and four children Ethan, Ella, Jake and Ivy. I also enjoy running and walking our dogs, Charlie and Bella, in the beautiful Sedbergh countryside. Away from the classroom I love coaching all sport, and I believe that sharing my passion for a healthy, balanced lifestyle helps me connect with pupils and foster a supportive environment where all pupils can flourish in every aspect of their time here at Sedbergh.
