Rugby at Sedbergh

Rugby is at the heart of Sedbergh’s sporting tradition. Our programme has produced players who excel at the very highest levels, while giving every pupil the chance to enjoy and grow through the game. With a new Head of Rugby leading the next chapter, Sedbergh continues to combine its history of excellence with a modern, player-centred approach.

Player Stories Meet the Head of Rugby

At Sedbergh, rugby is more than a game — it’s a vehicle for character, confidence, and lifelong friendships. We challenge players to raise their game intellectually, physically, and psychologically, developing resilience, humility, and leadership alongside technical skills. Whether competing at the highest level or simply enjoying the sport with friends, every pupil learns to play with ambition, integrity, and pride. If you’re serious about your rugby, there’s no better place to take your game to the next stage.

The Sedbergh Rugby IQ

Rugby at Sedbergh is built on more than strength and speed — it is shaped by intelligence, adaptability, and a deep understanding of the game. We develop what we call Rugby IQ: the ability to read the field, make smart decisions under pressure, and solve problems in real time. This sits alongside our four development pillars:

  • Environment – a supportive family culture and exposure to multiple sports that broaden perspective.
  • Psychological – resilience, humility, coachability, leadership, and an unwavering work ethic.
  • Physiological – coordination, speed, endurance, and durability that sustain performance.
  • Rugby IQ itself – spatial awareness, game sense, and the creativity to unlock opportunities.

Together, these qualities equip Sedberghians not just to play the game, but to think the game — skills that translate onto the pitch, into the classroom, and into life.

Player Pathways

Sedbergh’s rugby programme opens doors to a wide range of futures, whether pupils aspire to play professionally, pursue university rugby, or simply enjoy the game alongside other studies and interests. Our coaching staff have strong links with Premiership academies, universities, and national programmes, ensuring talented players are spotted and supported at the right stage.

Recent Sedberghians have signed professional contracts, earned scholarships, and gone on to represent their clubs, countries, and universities at the highest levels. Yet every pathway is valued: some pupils choose to continue rugby at a social or university level, while others focus on sport as part of a broader balance of academics and co-curricular pursuits.

At Sedbergh, success is not defined by one destination, but by giving every player the skills, resilience, and opportunities to carry rugby with them into whichever future they choose.

Rugby for all

While Sedbergh is renowned for producing players who excel at the highest levels, rugby here is for everyone. From the first XV to those picking up a ball for the very first time, every pupil has the chance to experience the camaraderie, discipline, and joy that rugby brings. With multiple teams across year groups, expert coaching, and a culture of inclusion, we ensure that every player finds their place on the field. At Sedbergh, rugby is not just about winning matches — it’s about belonging to something bigger.

Multi-sport culture

We believe the best rugby players are built, not born. Pupils at Sedbergh benefit from a multi-sport culture that develops the whole athlete: spatial awareness and problem-solving from hockey, agility and movement from netball, speed and endurance from athletics, and resilience and coordination from outdoor pursuits. This breadth gives Sedberghians the tools to thrive in rugby and beyond, while avoiding the early specialisation that limits potential.

Sam Moore, Head of Rugby

Sam Moore was appointed Head of Rugby at Sedbergh in August 2025 bringing with him strong coaching philosophy and a vision for growing both individual and collective excellence. He is responsible for the full leadership of the rugby programme — coaching the 1st XV and 1st VII, working with assistant coaches, analysts, medics, and strength & conditioning staff.

The role also involves oversight of match programmes, coach allocations, competitions, and outreach to professional academies, feeder schools, and performance pathways. Sam’s approach is rooted in integrity and values: developing players who not only perform, but who grow in game sense, decision making, resilience, and leadership.

“Sedbergh is a place that is strong in values, tradition, and community. I aim to build on that foundation, helping every player improve not only in their physical game but in decision making, game sense, and leadership. Rugby at Sedbergh isn’t just about winning matches — it’s about developing people who can thrive on and off the pitch.” Sam Moore, Head of Rugby
