School life at Sedbergh

School life at Sedbergh is shaped by full boarding, House life, shared values and a seven-day rhythm that helps pupils grow in confidence, independence and character. In a community where pupils live, learn and take part together, education extends far beyond the classroom. Every day brings opportunities to build friendships, contribute to others, try something new, take responsibility and develop Character that Counts.

At Sedbergh Senior School, school life is built around belonging, challenge and participation. As a full boarding school in Cumbria, pupils are part of a close House community where routines, relationships and shared experiences help them grow.

Our values — Humility, Ambition, Resilience and Kindness — shape the way pupils live and learn together. They are supported by the Front Four, Sedbergh’s framework for personal growth, which helps pupils develop confidence, responsibility, direction and a sense of service through Compass, Service, Pathways and Spirit.

Together, boarding, values and the Front Four create a distinctive seven-day education. Pupils are encouraged to work hard, care for others, make the most of opportunity and understand the kind of person they are becoming.

A full boarding community

Full boarding gives Sedbergh its distinctive rhythm. Pupils are not simply at school for lessons; they are part of a seven-day community where academic work, House life, sport, activities, meals, weekends and friendships all belong together.

This creates a strong sense of belonging. Pupils learn to live alongside others, manage their time, contribute to their House and develop the confidence that comes from being known and supported.

House life and belonging

The House is at the heart of daily life at Sedbergh. It is where pupils return after lessons, share meals, prepare for events, support one another and build friendships across year groups.

Each House gives pupils a secure base within the wider School. Housemasters, Housemistresses, tutors, matrons and pastoral staff work closely together to help pupils feel known, supported and encouraged. For boarders and day pupils alike, the House provides identity, routine and a strong sense of community.

Values lived every day

Sedbergh’s values are Humility, Ambition, Resilience and Kindness. Known as HARK, they give pupils a shared language for how they treat others, approach challenge and make the most of opportunity.

These values are not separate from school life. They are seen in the classroom, on the pitch, in the boarding House, through service, in leadership roles and in the small everyday choices that shape character. Pupils are encouraged to aim high, respond well to setbacks, act with kindness and understand the importance of contributing to something beyond themselves.

The Front Four: personal growth in practice

The Front Four is Sedbergh’s framework for personal growth. It gives structure to the experiences that help pupils develop Character that Counts.

Through Compass, Service, Pathways and Spirit, pupils are encouraged to understand themselves, contribute to others, think about their futures and strengthen their sense of belonging. The Front Four connects pastoral care, personal development, leadership, careers, service and community life in a way that is practical and visible to pupils.

  • Compass helps pupils build resilience, self-awareness and the skills to navigate school life and life beyond Sedbergh.
  • Service encourages humility through practical contribution to the School, local community and wider charitable causes.
  • Pathways connects ambition with futures, helping pupils think about university, careers, apprenticeships, leadership and the choices ahead.
  • Spirit strengthens kindness, belonging and community through shared experience, House identity and the way pupils support one another.

Chaplaincy and Spiritual Life

Sedbergh is a Christian foundation, and Chapel remains part of the weekly rhythm of School life. Chaplaincy offers pupils space for worship, reflection, discussion and pastoral support, while welcoming pupils of all faiths and none.

The Chaplaincy team supports pupils across the Senior and Prep Schools, contributing to assemblies, Chapel services, confirmation preparation, quiet reflection and informal discussion groups. It gives pupils time to think about values, purpose, community and their place in the wider world.

Character that Counts

School life at Sedbergh is designed to help pupils become confident, thoughtful and responsible young people. Full boarding gives them independence. House life gives them belonging. HARK gives them values. The Front Four gives them a framework for personal growth.

Together, these experiences shape Character that Counts: the ability to work hard, care for others, respond to challenge, take responsibility and contribute positively to the world beyond school.

A seven-day education

Sedbergh’s seven-day rhythm means pupils have time and space to take part fully. Evenings and weekends are part of the educational experience, with sport, music, drama, outdoor activities, clubs, societies, House events and time with friends all contributing to school life.
This breadth matters. Pupils are encouraged to try new things, discover interests, develop confidence and learn from experiences beyond formal lessons. Whether through a match, rehearsal, walk on the fells, chapel service, House competition or quiet conversation with a tutor, school life helps pupils grow in ways that cannot be measured by grades alone.
