Ramsay: Balance, Belonging and Determination

Ramsay achieved strong GCSE results last summer and has now begun his A Level studies at Sedbergh, choosing Maths, Economics and Physics. In this interview, he reflects on the value of close relationships with teachers and peers, the structure that boarding life provides, and how Sedbergh’s balance of academic focus and co-curricular opportunity helps pupils develop confidence and independence.

Ramsay’s Key Reflections

“The personalised help is something which stands out much more than at any other school.”
“Prep each evening allows us to stay on top of work while still committing to sport and friends without falling behind.”
“The integration of sport, music and societies in school life allows pupils like myself to excel and maintain academic focus.”
“Alongside sport, I also take part in societies, which give me a even greater range of opportunities. I believe the integration of these activities in school life allows pupils like myself to excel and maintain academic focus.”

What do you think is different about studying at Sedbergh compared to other schools?

I believe studying at Sedbergh is significantly different from any other school. Personally, what I believe stands out for me is the close-knit relationships among the students and staff developing a strong Sedbergh community. The fact that the teachers are always present to offer that extra helping hand and guidance is amazing. Even the idea around being so close to your mates allows you to even receive help from other boys in house.  I feel this made a real difference for me throughout my GCSE process. The personalised help is something which stands out much more than any other schools.

How did boarding help you balance your academic work with everything else you do at school?

Although life at Sedbergh is busy and full of constant activity, I’ve found it easier than expected to balance academics with everything else going on during a school day. One of the biggest helps is the idea of prep, a set time in the evenings each day where everyone gets on with their own work. It allows us to stay on top of work allowing me to commit further with other aspects of school life such as sport and hanging out with friends without falling behind.

What A Levels/BTEC subjects have you chosen for Sixth Form?

For my A-levels, I’m taking Maths, Economics and Physics, which I feel are a good all round basis leading my way towards university. Although, I have not figured a specific career choice for the future, I am certainly keeping my options open.

How did sport, music, or other activities fit alongside your studies?

Extracurricular activities play an important part of my school life, as they provide balance and allow me to develop all types of skills within and beyond the classroom. Sport, in particular plays a central role in my day, with rugby, football, and golf being regular commitments. These activities have taught me many qualities that help compliment my academic work. Alongside sport, I also take part in societies, which give me a even greater range of opportunities. I believe the integration of these activities in school life allows pupils like myself to excel and maintain academic focus.
