Jamie: Earth Sciences and Physical Geography at the University of Edinburgh

Jamie has accepted a place at the University of Edinburgh to study Earth Sciences and Physical Geography, following an offer from Durham. His interest in the subject has been shaped by the academic support he has received at Sedbergh, as well as by the opportunities to learn from the landscape around him.

“The teacher support, in and outside of the classroom, has helped my academic success from the start,” Jamie says.

For Jamie, Sedbergh’s small classes have made a real difference. He particularly credits Dr McGowan’s enthusiasm in teaching their class of five, helping pupils to stay interested and engaged in the subject.

“Dr McGowan’s enthusiasm, teaching our small class of five, made us all interested and engaged,” he says.

Jamie also points to the variety of activities available at Sedbergh as helping him to build confidence, both in teams and in individual work. He values the range of experiences that pupils are able to access because of the School’s location, from camping in the surrounding hills during Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions to sailing close to School.

His sailing has also progressed beyond participation. Jamie has achieved an instructor-level sailing qualification, reflecting the confidence, independence and practical skills he has developed through the opportunities available to him.

“The wide variety of experiences in the area would not otherwise be possible, such as camping on Gold DofE in the surrounding hills and sailing on the doorstep,” he says.

Full boarding has also helped Jamie grow in confidence. Living in a House with pupils from many different countries has given him experience of being part of a busy, international community and prepared him well for the next stage.

“Sedbergh has given me confidence through full boarding, moving into a House and living with many people from all around the globe,” he says.
