Leading with Humility: Emelia on Life as Deputy Head of School

As Deputy Head of School, Emelia carries both responsibility and pride into her final year at Sedbergh. From supporting the Prefect Team to inspiring younger Sedberghians, she balances academics, sport, and leadership with warmth and determination. In this interview, she reflects on what the role means to her, the lessons she has learned, and the friendships that have shaped her journey. Emelia’s story is one of humility, resilience, and gratitude — qualities that capture the spirit of Sedbergh’s values and shine through in everything she does.

Have you noticed a difference in how you feel now In Year 13 compared to Year 12?

This year feels very different, as I know I hold greater responsibilities and higher expectations — in academics, in House, and in sport, as well as in my appointed role. I’m very aware of the standards I need to meet, but I also feel a sense of emotion knowing it is my final year at Sedbergh — my last opportunity to leave a positive mark on the School.

What does your role as Deputy Head of School entail?

So far, I have found the role to be both challenging and rewarding, as it carries a lot of responsibility to uphold and pass on the values of the School to younger pupils. A big part of my role is supporting the prefect team and working closely with Ollie and Jemima (Heads of School) in their leadership. Alongside Tom (Joint Deputy Head of School), my responsibilities have included assembly readings, regular meetings, and, most importantly, striving to be a positive role model for younger Sedberghians.

What’s the biggest challenge for you juggling your role as Deputy Head of School and your A levels?

I would definitely say time management is going to be the biggest challenge, especially as I approach the Summer Term. However, with organisation, careful planning, and cooperation with those around me, I believe it is something I can manage well. Structuring my days in advance is already proving to be very effective.

What were your thoughts on being honoured with this appointment?

When I was appointed Deputy Head, I was at the World School Games Netball Tournament, travelling on a bus with four other teams. It meant I couldn’t quite show just how excited and honoured I was at the time! That said, I was over the moon and extremely grateful for the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of my friend, Izzy Gaskin. Being surrounded by close friends who had also been given roles made me feel immensely proud of them as well.

Do you have a vision for what you’d like to achieve as a leader of the school community?

As part of the Listening Service and the Diana Award team, I have always been passionate about instilling kindness in the Sedbergh community, and I hope to continue nurturing that culture. I also want to help pupils feel confident enough to seize every opportunity available to them — whether that’s in sport, drama, or academics. I want every pupil to feel that nothing is beyond them, and I want to ensure they are not afraid to give anything and everything a go!

Do you know what pathway you’d like to follow after sixth form?

I have just submitted my UCAS application for Physiotherapy courses at Cardiff, Liverpool, Birmingham, Northumbria, and Nottingham. My plan is to complete my degree in the UK before pursuing a Master’s in Australia. After that, I hope to work as a physiotherapist within the military.

Why that pathway?

I have been passionate about Physiotherapy for around six years. My interest began when I experienced my own sporting injuries and was fascinated by the recovery process. This interest has been strengthened through various work experiences, including a week in the NHS and placements in the private sector. I am drawn to the military because I believe it will both challenge me and expose me to the realities of the world, helping me to grow personally and professionally.

Are there any Sedbergh staff or programmes that are really helping you to achieve your goals?

At Sedbergh, we are fortunate to have incredibly supportive staff who go above and beyond for their pupils. This has ranged from early morning Maths and extra Chemistry sessions to one-to-one Biology support and guidance with my university applications. My Tutor, Mrs Bolton, has been a constant source of encouragement and has invested so much time in me and my peers. I am someone who always seeks help when I need it, and at Sedbergh that support is always readily available.

What is Sedbergh School teaching you that will guide you as you finish senior school and prepare to start university?

Sedbergh has helped me develop independence in my learning, through projects such as the EPQ and preparation for exams. These skills will be invaluable at university. Beyond academics, the sociable environment here has helped me grow in confidence, which will make the transition to university feel much more natural.

What advice would you give to other pupils looking at this pathway – or unsure about what to do?

I would strongly recommend doing several work experiences before applying to university or an apprenticeship. This allows you to gain a realistic perspective of your chosen career. For me, it confirmed my passion for Physiotherapy, but for others it might highlight that it isn’t the right path — which is equally valuable. I would also remind pupils to ensure their pathway is truly their own. It should be based on what you love, not just on what you are good at or what others expect of you.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned at Sedbergh School? Inside or outside of the classroom.

The most important lesson I’ve learned is humility. Sedbergh has taught me to be grateful for every opportunity and has made me deeply aware of the privileged position I am in. That awareness encourages me to make the most of my time here and to approach the future with appreciation and purpose.

What is your favourite memory so far of Sedbergh School?

I can’t pinpoint one memory that sticks out; however, the memories that I have made will stay with me forever. I have made true friendships that I will carry and cherish for life, and I have been surrounded by the kindest, most genuine, and funniest girls, making every day a pleasant memory for me.
