Tilly Gilraine: Bold and Ambitious Start in a Degree Apprenticeship in Financial Services

For many pupils, A Level results mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Having achieved outstanding results, Tilly Gilraine has chosen a bold and independent path — a Degree Apprenticeship in Financial Services with J.P. Morgan, combining academic study with hands-on industry experience. Her decision reflects a thoughtful, forward-looking approach to her future and a confidence in choosing the route that suits her ambitions best.

“I feel both excited and curious about starting my apprenticeship,” says Tilly. “I’m especially looking forward to working with people from different backgrounds, building connections and taking on new challenges that will help me grow.”

Her story is one of determination, curiosity, and courage — qualities that will serve her well as she takes this exciting next step.

What thoughts went through your mind when you received your results?

I actually got my results while sitting in a van, halfway through moving my whole life to London for my apprenticeship. So, I definitely had a big distraction – but I was excited to see how my work had paid off!

What are you looking forward to about starting your Degree Apprenticeship in Financial Services at JP Morgan?

I feel both excited and curious about starting my apprenticeship. I’m especially looking forward to working with people from different backgrounds, building connections, and taking on new challenges that will help me grow. Having real-world experience in the industry is an exciting and valuable thing.

What is your favourite memory of Sedbergh School?

It’s hard to choose just one favourite memory from Sedbergh. The Wilson Run definitely stands out – it’s something everyone talks about, but being part of it really was unforgettable. The sailing trip was another highlight, giving me the chance to try something completely different.

Are there any Sedbergh staff or programmes that have really helped you?

Honestly, I don’t think I could pick just one member of staff – every subject teacher helped me in different ways, whether it was explaining something for the tenth time or giving me the confidence to keep going. But also the in-house staff; whenever you had a problem, it would always become their first priority!

What has Sedbergh School taught you that will guide you as you start university?

At Sedbergh, no two days were ever the same, which taught me how to juggle a busy schedule. I learned the importance of planning ahead, being organised, and not being afraid to ask for help when I needed it. The school also built my resilience – whether it was pushing through the Wilson Run or tackling a tough piece of coursework. I also learned how important communication between teachers and others was, as they are always wanting to support you.

When did you decide to pursue a degree apprenticeship?

I always knew that the traditional university route wasn’t for me. I wanted something that combined real-world experience with learning, which is why a degree apprenticeship felt like the best option, especially with my future goals in mind. At first, I explored property-based apprenticeships, but as I went through the different application stages, this particular financial services programme really stood out. I was also tempted by the idea of a gap year, as I love travelling, but after speaking to current apprentices, I realised there would be plenty of opportunities to travel and experience new things while on the programme – so I don’t feel I would be missing out at all.

What advice would you give to another pupil looking at this pathway – or unsure about what to do?

If you’re not sure what to do, I would say… don’t close off any paths too quickly. I knew I didn’t want to go to university, but I still looked at different options just to be certain. Reaching out to people already on apprenticeships was one of the most helpful things I did – hearing their experiences was great to see if it sounded like something for you. I’d also say start your applications as early as you can; mine opened in August! Going to lots of events also helped me, speaking to professionals and getting their advice, which was also great interview practice.
