SEDInspire Lecture with Nathan Stirk

By Dr Philip Hoskin

On Friday 9th October, the Hirst Centre welcomed award-winning sports photographer Nathan Stirk for an engaging SEDInspire lecture, offering a fascinating insight into the skill, preparation and dedication behind professional photography.

Drawing on nearly a decade of experience, Nathan took the audience behind the lens, exploring the challenges of capturing the moments that define sport. From Premier League football to elite cricket, his work demonstrated how a single photograph can convey emotion, tell a story and preserve a fleeting moment.

The evening offered an opportunity to consider what makes an outstanding sports photograph: technical precision, creativity, an understanding of the game and the instinct to anticipate the action. Audience questions explored positioning, the pressure of capturing unrepeatable moments, editing and the changing role of technology.

A central message was the importance of hard work and commitment to one’s craft. Nathan’s career illustrated the sustained effort required to develop expertise, pursue opportunities and produce work of a consistently high standard. His photography, published nationally through Getty Images and recognised with Photo of the Year at the ECB Domestic Cricket Journalism Awards 2024, provided an inspiring example of where that dedication can lead.

Our sincere thanks to Nathan for sharing his time, experience and enthusiasm, and for encouraging young people to approach their interests with curiosity, perseverance and ambition.
