Academic Mindset

Beginning in Year 9 through our 9 Inspire curriculum, pupils start to develop the habits that define a Sedbergh academic mindset: intellectual resilience, critical thinking, leadership and thoughtful collaboration. These qualities are cultivated deliberately, creating the confidence to engage with challenge, think independently and persevere when ideas are complex. In doing so, pupils build not only a strong foundation for GCSE study, but the mindset required for sustained academic growth beyond the classroom.

Curriculum Overview

Sedbergh’s curriculum is broad and flexible, designed to challenge and support pupils across a wide range of subjects. Teaching focuses on developing intellectual curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, while ensuring strong academic progress. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, build independence and develop the resilience needed for success in Sixth Form and beyond.

Learning extends beyond the classroom through enrichment programmes, academic societies and opportunities to explore new ideas. This balanced approach ensures that every pupil leaves Sedbergh equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in higher education and future careers.

Academic results

Our Sixth Form pupils achieve strong results that open doors to a wide range of university courses, apprenticeships and professional opportunities. While many choose to continue their studies at leading universities — in 2025, 54% accepted offers from Russell Group institutions — others pursue pathways in areas such as the performing arts, sport, business, the military and industry, both in the UK and overseas. Every pupil is guided to identify their strengths and ambitions, and supported to take the next step that best fits their individual goals and potential.

The breadth and depth of courses and destinations that the pupils are now moving on to study is testament to their hard work and dedication combined with the commitment and support demonstrated by the staff team.

Oxbridge Mentoring

Sedbergh’s Oxbridge Mentoring Programme supports pupils with the ambition and academic potential to apply to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The programme combines personalised guidance with subject-specific challenge to help pupils prepare with confidence for every stage of the process.

Pupils benefit from tailored academic enrichment, one-to-one mentoring with experienced staff, and practice interviews designed to develop critical thinking and communication skills. Regular discussion groups and workshops extend learning beyond the A Level syllabus, encouraging intellectual curiosity and independent thought.

Throughout the process, pupils are supported to approach their application with authenticity and purpose — developing the academic depth, confidence and self-awareness needed to thrive in competitive university environments.

Academic Enrichment Through Societies

Our commitment to academic growth extends beyond the classroom through a diverse suite of enrichment societies. These societies provide pupils with opportunities to delve deeper into their favourite subjects, explore new ideas, and collaborate with like-minded peers.

Whether you’re drawn to debating current global issues, investigating advanced topics in science and technology, or engaging with philosophical questions in literature and classical studies, there is a society designed to inspire and challenge. Each group is led by specialist staff who bring expertise, enthusiasm and a commitment to pushing boundaries.

Participation supports intellectual curiosity, independent thinking and self-driven learning — skills that are vital for success at A Level, university and beyond. Pupils who engage regularly in societies gain confidence in discussion, research and leadership.
