9 Inspire Tour Maths

Sedbergh School is an environment for every pupil to maximise their potential. Mathematical reasoning is fundamental to understanding and navigating the modern world, as reflected by the importance of maths qualifications to a variety of competitive and in-demand future pathways. Through our engaging and pragmatic approach to teaching and learning, we strive to equip our pupils with the skills they need to achieve their ambitions.

There are few skills more important than making effective decisions based on the information at one’s disposal. Through our 9 Inspire programme, our pupils use maths to interpret and respond to their world from the very start of their school journey. Year 9 pupils complete the 9 Inspire project, which is woven into our maths curriculum. Embedded in our unique location, they are challenged to apply mathematical methods and use technology to predict the results of the Wilson Run, the oldest and toughest school cross country race in the world.

Our values of humility, ambition, resilience, and kindness are at the heart of a Sedbergh School mathematics education. Progress is carefully monitored through regular assessment, and our close-knit community ensures we understand our pupils from a pastoral as well as an academic perspective. Beyond timetabled classes, our daily ‘early morning maths’ sessions allow pupils to acknowledge and address the gaps in their knowledge with one-to-one teacher support, as well as allowing the most ambitious to stretch themselves further. Alongside creating bespoke materials to support pupils preparing for the Foundation Tier IGCSE, the department also has a wealth of experience teaching Further Mathematics at A level, one of the most rigorous and highly regarded A level courses available.

Mathematics is and will remain hugely important in every child’s education. We continue to make every effort to ensure Sedbergh School pupils thrive in this subject.
