Evans House was originally the residence of the Headmaster in 1784. The House emblem and colour—a yellow wasp—have remained unchanged since it became a boarding house in 1878.

Alan Toward began as Housemaster of Evans House in January 2026. Joining Sedbergh in 2019, Alan has served as resident tutor in Hart House, before moving up to become Deputy Housemaster for three years. As well as being a Housemaster, Alan is also part of our PE teaching staff and is Head of Athletics.
A former two-time international athlete in Discus and Bobsleigh, Alan is Head of Scholarship and High Performance Sport at Sedbergh. Guiding, mentoring and supporting our gifted sport scholars through their journey at Sedbergh in their chosen sport.
Alan and his partner Liv, a Durham University graduate and Primary School Teacher, have an open door policy to their approach to life in Evans House – providing round the clock pastoral care to every boy in their care and helping to understand the needs of the individual, and how to get the best out of everyone.
