Netball at Sedbergh

Netball is a core sport, played throughout both the Michaelmas and Lent terms.

We field 12 teams across the two terms, offering opportunities for both performance netball—where our A teams compete for success—and social netball, for pupils who simply enjoy the game. Our extensive programme of weekly fixtures include friendlies, tournaments, and participation in Netball Cup competitions.

Our Players Meet our Head of Netball

Sedbergh is ambitious for every pupil—to help them grow in their netball ability while also developing vital life skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork.

While we are incredibly proud of our elite netball alumni – most notably Ella Bowen who currently plays for the Leeds Rhinos Superleague Team and has International caps for England, netball at Sedbergh is for anyone who loves the game, just as much as it is for players with big (or small) aspirations.

At Sedbergh, players don’t just develop skills – they grow in confidence, character, and ambition.
We build players for life.

A dedicated netball home

Netball is a core sport at Sedbergh, so our netballers have priority access to train in our superb indoor double sports hall, which houses two full-size netball courts—providing a weatherproof base for high-quality training and match play. When the sun shines, two additional outdoor courts extend our capacity and bring the game to life in the fresh Cumbrian air. Supporting every athlete’s development, our specialist weights gym allows netballers to work on strength and conditioning programmes designed specifically to enhance court performance, agility, and injury resilience.

Development

Sedbergh offers an environment where players at every level are encouraged, challenged, and celebrated. There is a role and pathway for all players, whether they’re aiming for top-level netball or simply want to be part of something fast-paced and team-driven.

We actively support access to the national performance pathway, helping talented athletes trial for top franchises—including Manchester Thunder and Leeds Rhinos. Sedbergh players regularly trial for Cumbria Netball and represent the county with pride. Many of our players have earned selection for U17 and U19 elite squads.

We field 12 teams across two terms. Participation and opportunities are high, 95% of pupils represented Sedbergh in fixtures and in 2024/2025 we played 80 fixtures.

Megan Ascough, Head of Netball

From the moment Megan picked up a netball at 13, she was hooked—and she’s been chasing excellence on and off the court ever since. Her early promise saw her selected for the County Pathway before progressing to the Yorkshire Regional Squad at just 16. That experience of high-performance netball from a young age now fuels her commitment to helping others discover their own potential in the sport.

As Head of Netball at Sedbergh, Megan brings more than just expertise—she brings infectious energy and a deep passion for the game. Having previously coached within the County Pathway system and served as Head Coach at a thriving Junior Netball Club, she knows how to develop players of all abilities, from first-time shooters to elite competitors.

What makes Megan’s leadership special is her ability to combine high standards with heart. She creates a positive, hardworking, and supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to push themselves—individually and together as a team. Her ambition is simple but powerful: to share the drive that inspires her, and to help every pupil connect with the game in a way that unlocks confidence, communication, and leadership far beyond the court.

At Sedbergh, where big achievements grow from a close-knit community, Megan’s programme is a perfect fit—ambitious, uplifting, and proof that in the right hands, even a smaller school can compete with the best.

“For me, success isn’t solely defined by winning matches, but by witnessing growth, development, and the resilience needed to overcome challenges. I believe that true character is built through perseverance. I want every player to understand that mistakes are a natural part of the learning journey, and that fear of failure should never hold them back from trying something new.”
“I want to create an environment that gives each and every player the opportunity to develop and challenge their own abilities to be the best they can be but to also make them feel a part of our Netball Family.” Megan Ascough, Head of Netball
