Sailing

Sailing runs all-year at Sedbergh with activity peaking during the summer term when we sail five days a week. The Royal Navy CCF also regularly sails on Thursdays during term-time. Our experience, location and facilities mean that we are equipped to provide a variety of experiences including recreational sailing, training and accreditation for RYA qualifications, annual ‘challenge’ yachting events, team-racing and attendance at regattas. Sedbergh sails at nearby Killington Lake and utilises the Killington Sailing Association’s change-rooms and club-house.

RYA Accreditation

The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) is the national governing body for dinghy, motor and sail cruising, all forms of sail racing, RIBs and sportsboats, windsurfing and personal watercraft and a leading representative body for inland waterways cruising.

Sedbergh is one of few schools that is a RYA registered training centre and so, with our qualified staff, is able to offer RYA certified training including xxxxxxx.

Annual Challenge Week Event

Our Challenge Week sailing events provide opportunities for pupils to have unique – often once-in-a-lifetime – experiences that extend their skills and test their resilience. In 2024 we will take 10 of our Year 12 pupils on a 72ft tall ship to sail up the west coast of the UK. Past events have included the 3-Peaks Yacht Race.

Facilities and Equipment

Sedbergh is only 5.3 miles (a 15 minute drive) from Killington Lake. We store our boats at the Killington Sailing Association and our pupils utilise the change-rooms and club-house. We currently have 23 boats – including 2 powerboats and 10 picos plus fevas, Laser 3000s, single-handed lasers and argos’.

Racing

We regularly compete in the RYA Youth Travellers Series and Team Racing events such as the Northern Championships at Ripon Sailing Club and the NSSA Single Handed and Double Handed National Championships. Teams have competed in the CCF National Regatta, and we have a regular program of fixtures against schools such as Windermere. Sailing is offered as an extra-curricular activity at the Prep School and each year we run a Junior Regatta for schools in the North.

Resilience isn’t just about getting back on track… it’s also about finding new depths of talent and uncovering hidden potential.
