Time to Talk Day at Sedbergh: Choosing Conversation over Scrolling

To mark Time to Talk Day earlier this month, pupils and staff across Sedbergh took part in a simple but powerful challenge — stepping away from social media for the day and choosing conversation instead.

The aim was not to enforce rules, but to encourage reflection: what happens when we look up rather than down? When we replace scrolling with speaking?

The response from our community was thoughtful and honest.

Many pupils and staff reported feeling more present and engaged in the people around them. One reflection noted:

“Paid more attention to what others were saying and responded properly.”

Others spoke about unexpected social benefits:

“Lots of people were talking to each other when they are not people that do talk to each other often.”

For some, the biggest impact was awareness. One respondent reflected:

“Most noticeable difference was realising how much it consumes our day.”

And perhaps most powerfully, one member of our community shared:

“In the evening when I went on Facebook and started scrolling I felt really anxious and numb. I should have stayed off it.”

Not everyone noticed a dramatic change — and that honesty was equally important. For some, the day felt “normal”, highlighting how embedded digital habits have become in everyday life. But even small moments of reflection matter.

Time to Talk Day reminded us that meaningful conversation remains at the heart of a strong school community. Whether it was roommates having a “nice conversation”, friends spending breaktime talking rather than scrolling, or simply feeling more focused during the day, the initiative sparked valuable awareness.

Thank you to everyone who took part and shared their reflections. The conversations will continue.
