Lights, camera, action! The inaugural SOSCARS
by Stuart Sutton, Digital Media teacher
This summer, Sedbergh School celebrated creativity, collaboration and a little friendly rivalry with the launch of the inaugural SOSCARS, an inter-house filmmaking competition that challenged pupils to become writers, directors, actors and editors in just one week.
Each House was tasked with creating an original short film of no more than five minutes. From comedy and mystery to thrillers and action-packed adventures, the brief was deliberately broad, allowing pupils to develop their own ideas and showcase their imagination. Working in teams, they planned scripts, organised filming schedules, experimented with camera techniques and edited their productions, discovering just how much work goes into making even the shortest of films.
The competition encouraged pupils to take on a wide variety of roles behind the scenes. Producers managed the projects, writers developed the stories, camera operators experimented with creative cinematography, editors pieced together the final productions and actors brought each script to life. It was fantastic to see pupils from different year groups and with different interests working together towards a common goal.
The standard of filmmaking was incredibly high. Houses embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, producing everything from laugh-out-loud comedies and suspense-filled thrillers to clever mysteries and imaginative adventures. The creativity, humour and technical ability on display demonstrated just how much talent exists across the School.
The week culminated in a glamorous black-tie awards evening held in Powell Hall. With dramatic lighting, cinematic introductions and a red-carpet atmosphere, pupils and staff gathered to watch the premiere of each House’s film on the big screen. Seeing the audience react with laughter, applause and genuine suspense made the evening feel like a true film festival.
Awards were presented across a range of categories, including Best Soundtrack, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Acting and the coveted Best Film. Each award celebrated a different aspect of filmmaking, recognising not only outstanding performances on screen but also the creativity and technical skill behind the camera.
Beyond the trophies, the competition highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication and problem-solving. Pupils quickly discovered that successful filmmaking depends on collaboration, careful planning and the willingness to adapt when things do not quite go to plan. These are valuable skills that extend far beyond the world of film.
The inaugural SOSCARS proved to be far more than just a competition. It became a celebration of creativity, House spirit and the power of storytelling. The enthusiasm shown by every participating House has laid the foundations for what promises to become a much-loved Sedbergh tradition.
After such a successful debut, one question remains…
What stories will next year’s SOSCARS bring to the big screen?
