Joining in year 9

A confident start to Senior School

Year 9 is Sedbergh’s main point of entry and gives pupils time to settle into full-boarding life before GCSE study begins. Through House life, new friendships, academic breadth, sport, outdoor challenge and the 9 Inspire curriculum, pupils build the confidence, habits and independence they need for the years ahead.

Why join in Year 9

Joining in Year 9 gives pupils time to become part of Sedbergh before GCSE choices and examination pressures begin. They learn the rhythm of full boarding, build friendships, get to know their House and discover where they can contribute. It is a year for settling, stretching and growing into Senior School life.

ISI 2025 identified boarding as a significant strength of Sedbergh School

Inspectors highlighted the confidence pupils gain from boarding, the breadth of activities available to them, and the access they have to staff who understand their needs.

9 Inspire: challenge from the start

9 Inspire gives Year 9 pupils a distinctive start to Senior School. It combines academic curiosity with outdoor challenge, leadership, teamwork and personal development, helping pupils build confidence in the classroom and beyond it. The programme encourages pupils to think independently, try new things and develop the habits they need for GCSE and later study.
