Full boarding & house life

Sedbergh is one of the UK’s few genuinely full-boarding schools. House life shapes the rhythm of every day, giving pupils the time, structure and support to work hard, take part fully, build friendships and grow in confidence.

A seven-day education

At Sedbergh, boarding is not an add-on to school life. It is the structure that makes the whole experience possible. Pupils live, learn, eat, compete, rehearse, serve and relax within a community that continues beyond the timetable.

Because almost all pupils board, evenings and weekends are full and purposeful. Academic support, House activities, sport, music, service, outdoor learning and friendships all have time to develop.

ISI 2025 identified boarding as a significant strength of Sedbergh School

Inspectors highlighted the confidence pupils gain from boarding, the breadth of activities available to them, and the access they have to staff who understand their needs.

A House to belong to

Every pupil belongs to a House, giving them a smaller community within the wider School. Housemasters, Housemistresses, tutors, matrons and resident staff know pupils well and work closely together to support their academic progress, wellbeing and daily routines.

House life gives pupils identity, friendship and responsibility. Older pupils support younger pupils, new pupils are helped to settle quickly, and day pupils are included in the same House activities as boarders.

ISI 2025: “Senior pupils are highly supportive of younger boarders.”

“What reassured us most was how quickly our child felt known. The House became their base, and the staff understood the small things as well as the big ones.” Parent in Sedbergh’s June 2026 survey
