Mike Dudley and Adrian Mellor on Sailing and Mountaineering Expedition to South Georgia

by Dr Philip Hoskin

On Friday 14th March, it was a pleasure to welcome Adrian Mellor and Mike Dudley and to listen to them speak about their sailing and mountaineering expedition to South Georgia, including the first ascent of Douglas Crag.

The expedition commenced on 25th September and continued until 2nd November 2023, during which members of the Corps of Royal Engineers sailed from the UK to the Falkland Islands in three legs, and after visiting South Georgia, sailed on to the Caribbean in a further two. Exploratory mountaineering and scientific research, in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey, were conducted throughout the expedition.

Through a combination of stunning photography and eloquent description, the captivated audience was offered a vivid insight into the planning and participation of such an endeavour — from the famously wild weather extremes to the psychological demands placed upon individuals and team. It is hard to believe, in an age so meticulously mapped and claimed, that such wild and untouched places still exist. Listening to Mike and Ade recount the first ascent of Douglas Crag was a stirring reminder of the earth’s enduring, untamed heart.

Throughout our 500-year history, countless Old Sedberghians have carved their names into the annals of exploration — as bold climbers, fearless sailors, and seekers of distant, unclaimed horizons. Mike and Adrian’s inspiring talk reminded us all that the world still holds uncharted heights and unmapped waters. It was an evening not merely of stories told, but of futures quietly imagined.
