More than 400 children support young fundraiser at Sedbergh Courses
More than 400 children and 50 coaches taking part in Sedbergh Courses came together today to support a young participant who is raising money for Cancer Research UK.
Seb, who is attending Sedbergh Courses at Sedbergh School this summer, has committed to running one mile every day throughout July while his father undergoes chemotherapy.
His efforts have already raised more than £800. However, the Sedbergh Courses team knew nothing about his fundraising when he first arrived.
Coaches discovered what he was doing, and the reason behind it, during Tuesday’s session. Moved by his kindness and determination, the team decided to support him by joining one of his daily runs.
Earlier in the week, Sedbergh Courses Director Jason Duffy had spoken to the coaching team about the importance of creating experiences that extend beyond sport.
He described Sedbergh Courses as being about creating memorable moments for the young people who attend. Later that week, more than 400 children and 50 coaches completed Seb’s mile alongside him.
Jason Duffy, Director of Sedbergh Courses, said:
“At the start of every course, we talk to our coaches about the responsibility we have to create memorable moments for every child who comes to Sedbergh. Today was one of those moments that none of us will forget.
“When we discovered that Seb had been running a mile every day while his dad undergoes chemotherapy, we wanted him to know that he was not running alone.
“Seeing more than 400 children and 50 coaches complete the mile alongside him was very special. We talk a lot at Sedbergh about our GOLD philosophy, and this was a genuine example of it: a young person showing kindness and determination, and a community choosing to support him.
“Sport has a powerful ability to bring people together, but today was about more than sport. We are very proud of Seb and hope that sharing his story will help him raise further funds for Cancer Research UK.”
The event reflected the community at the heart of Sedbergh Courses, where children come together each summer to develop their sporting skills, build confidence, make friendships and enjoy new experiences.
For Seb and his family, this summer’s course will now carry an additional significance.
His fundraising total currently stands at more than £800, with the Sedbergh Courses community hoping to help him raise even more.
