Year 9 and 10 bring Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to life
Over three days in the Arden Theatre, Sedbergh School’s Year 9 and 10 pupils have brought energy, humour and imagination to the stage in a lively production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Performed to delighted audiences across four performances, the much-loved musical transported parents, pupil and staff into the eccentric and adventurous world of inventor Caractacus Potts, the magical flying car Chitty, and the battle to outwit the sinister Child Catcher. Filled with memorable songs, fast-paced scenes and larger-than-life characters, the production demanded confidence, teamwork and resilience from a cast made up of some of Sedbergh’s youngest senior pupils.
While audiences saw polished performances under the lights, the production was built on weeks of rehearsals, with steady commitment from pupils balancing academic work, sport and wider school life alongside the demands of a major stage production. Learning lines, mastering choreography, developing characters and performing with confidence in front of our audiences have all formed part of the process.
One of the standout features of this year’s production was the live ‘Chitty’ band, made up of Sedbergh staff and pupils, whose playing brought warmth, pace and atmosphere to the performances. Their contribution added another layer of professionalism and demonstrated the collaborative spirit that underpins School productions.
The sense of enjoyment and camaraderie on stage was clear throughout the run. From comic timing and musical numbers to ensemble scenes involving the full cast, pupils performed with enthusiasm and growing confidence as the week progressed.
Productions like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang remain an important part of life at Sedbergh because they give pupils the opportunity to discover talents, build friendships and experience the shared achievement that comes from creating something ambitious together. By the final curtain on Friday evening, it was evident that the cast and crew had achieved exactly that.
