We are proud to learn that Sedbergh School has been named as a finalist at this year’s Independent School of the Year (ISOTY) Awards in the International Student Experience category.
Being named as a finalist, we have been recognised for our work on engaging our international pupils and helping them to integrate into school life. A lot of this work begins before pupils arrive at Sedbergh, ensuring their safe arrival to the airport and offering transfer support from all major UK airports to Sedbergh.
All international pupils receive a welcome pack which contains vocabulary lists, practice papers and subject notes to help them prepare. Families also receive regular updates from Houseparents so they feel part of the family. All new pupils go through an induction programme where they are fully immersed into the Sedbergh environment with team building exercises and excursions.
The winners of each category will be announced at an awards ceremony being held on Tuesday 11th October at 6pm.

We were all deeply saddened to receive the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Sedbergh School has fond memories of welcoming Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh on 3rd May 1991.
The period of National Mourning across the country brought a somber and reflective mood throughout Sedbergh School. During those ten days, we held special events to commemorate the life of the Her Majesty. Every day, at 10:50, one of our musicians performed a lament. This started with Lower Sixth pupil Alex performing ‘Flowers of the Forest’ in front of the whole school on our Cloisters.
In the days following, hundreds of pupils and staff wrote their personal message in the Book of Condolence, which was located in the Reception of our Main School. The Book of Condolence was later joined by a breathtaking piece of commemorative artwork by Upper Sixth pupil, Jolly.
Following the funeral, pupils and staff returned to school and gathered for a special service in our Chapel, to celebrate and remember the life of HM The Queen.
Joe, Year 12 pupil in Hart House, has recently started the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, to study Voice, on their Juniors Saturday Programme.

Joe, a former pupil of Sedbergh Prep School, has been ever-present in our Performing Arts programme since he joined us in Year 9. In just his first term with us, Joe starred as Oliver in our 2019 production of “Oliver!” and has gone on to perform on stage in further productions.
As well as a talented soloist, Joe is part of our Chapel Choir. Performing regularly throughout the School year, as well as extra events in and out of school. Our Chapel Choir were also named in the Young Choir of the Year finals in 2020, performing ‘I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes’, a song written by Mr John Seymour, Director of Creative Arts at Sedbergh School.
Back in July, Joe was recognised for his contribution to music at Sedbergh School with an award at Year 11 prizegiving.
It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of Mel Corrigan, who died peacefully last night at home with her family. Mel worked in the Learning Support Department from September 2014 and was an inspirational teacher to many pupils there over the years.
She will be missed by many who will remember her kindness and humility so fondly. She was a brilliant House Tutor and inspirational Games Coach who simply adored the fells in the company of Sedberghians.
All our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, son and extended family.
Old Sedberghian and current Yorkshire Cricket star Harry Brook joined his new England Test teammates for the final match in the three-match series against South Africa. Before the match started, Brook received his test cap from his Yorkshire teammate, Joe Root who shared some nice words about Brook saying; “enjoy every minute of this, we’re all proud of what you’ve achieved to get to this point. We know how good you are, we know how capable you are.”
Throughout his time with us, Brook’s skill was on display for all to see. In year 10, Brook memorably hit six sixes in an over, and just a few years later, in Sixth Form, he made his first team debut for Yorkshire.
It was here, at Sedbergh School, Brook worked with our Director of Cricket, Mr Martin Speight. The pair have remained close and on the first day of play, Mr Speight was in attendance at The Oval having been invited by Brook.
“From the second day of September term, every day Monday to Friday I start in the nets at 6.20am,” says Speight. “He trained every single morning.
Brook is only the second Sedberghian to receive an England Test Cricket cap, 87 years after OS Mandy Mitchell-Innes played his one and only test match for England.
Brook made a positive start in his first innings, but as he was looking settled at the crease, the players left the field for a rain delay. Shortly after the delay, Brook returned to the crease and was dismissed shortly after for 12.
Over the summer we have had lots of fun putting together the first event ‘Sedbergh Prep Chronicle’, a twice yearly newspaper roundup of life at the Prep School. Featuring pupil work, videos, articles by the Senior Pupil team and staff, artwork, challenges and lots more! It is a great read over a cup of tea.
