2022 saw the meteoric rise of Old Sedberghian Harry Brook, who, in the space of just a year, made his IT20 debut, his Test debut, guided Lahore Qalandars to the Pakistan Super League title and was part of the T20 World Cup winning side, after defeating Pakistan in the final in Melbourne, Australia.
This astonishing year was topped off in December with a simply phenomenal display in the test series in Pakistan. In a historic 3-0 series win in Pakistan, Brook finished the series as top run scorer (468 runs) and was named Player of the Series. In the opening test in Rawalpindi, Brook notched his maiden test century, finishing with 153. His incredible form throughout the series saw him score a century in each of the three tests.
His batting displays across all formats of the game, made him a key target for many sides in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and in the IPL auction in January, it was Sunrisers Hyderabad who bid Rs 13.25 crore (Approx £1.3m) for Harry’s services, making him the 5th most expensive player in the auction.
None of this recent success will have come as no surprise to Harry’s mentor and long-time coach, Mr Martin Speight – Sedbergh School Director of Cricket. Before Harry was meeting up with the England side ahead of their test tour to New Zealand, we were delighted to welcome Harry back to Sedbergh as he spent a couple of hours in our cricket nets with Mr Speight, the same nets he would practise in during his time here.
After a quick catch up with some staff, including Winder Housemaster Mr Mahon, and Director of Rugby, Mr Mulholland, Harry and Mr Speight set to their training session in the sports hall, with plenty of onlookers who spent their morning break watching from the balcony.

Future designers and engineers are invited to join Sedbergh Prep School’s Head of DTE, Mrs Victoria Thompson, for two Saturday mornings during January and February 2023 to design and make mini skateboards.
On Saturday 28th January and 4th February, we will be opening our DTE workshop and Computer Design Suite to children in Years 4, 5 and 6 who would be interested in developing their design, technology and workshop skills. The children will mould and laser cut the parts for the mini skateboards, as well as being tasked with using computer aided design to create the graphics for their finished product.

Please note that this Saturday Design School is free to attend and is open to children who do not currently attend the Prep School. The number of attendees are limited to 12, available on a first come first served basis and children should be able to attend both dates in order to finish their mini skateboard.
As part of their ‘Greatest Schools XV of the Decade’ our good friends at Next Gen XV also named their coach of the decade. They unanimously chose our very own Director of Rugby, Mr Simon Mulholland.
At the start of December, Mr Mulholland, a long with the rest of the SSFC staff and players, headed out to Thailand to take part in the World Schools Festival. Competing against worldwide schoolboy rugby powerhouses, such as; Grey College (South Africa), Hamilton Boys (New Zealand) and Millfield (UK). Following an opening day defeat to Millfield, Sedbergh bounced back with a win against Rugby Travel Academy (South Africa) to set up a game against St Michael’s College (Ireland) in the Shield Final. Producing their best rugby of the festival, with some incredible goal-kicking by Captain Ben, Sedbergh won 29-17, to the delight of the team, staff and travelling parents.
The entire Sedbergh School community is delighted that Mr Mulholland has received this accolade. To celebrate Mr Mulholland’s achievement, a very special video was put together featuring a lot of Old Sedberghians who wanted to congratulate ‘Knoxy’ on being named Coach of the Decade.
